Cheap, Homemade Costumes for Halloween

Halloween is one of my favorite fall events. I don’t consider it a holiday, because it’s Halloween, but I do love dressing up in costume and trick-or-treaters and everybody else’s costumes. I’ve seen some really great costumes that were clearly homemade, which is a great way to cut costs on Halloween. Since costumes are so much cheaper if you make them out of materials at home, why not try to DIY this year and save some cash? Here are some cheap costume ideas.

Funny or Unusual

Many people don’t want to go as something classic for Halloween, but you still don’t have to buy the entire costume from a costume shop. You can make funny, clever costumes at home for free or cheap.

One Night Stand Costume

This clever one night stand costume idea came from a friend of mine. She was going to be a one night stand for Halloween. It’s a play on words, because she made a costume that looked like a night stand. To do this, make some cuts in a large cardboard box for your head and arms (this will be the night stand base). Paint it the color of your choosing and paint on some drawers, handles, etc.  Glue down a light or empty book to it, a fake or broken alarm clock, a plastic cup (to look like a glass of water), maybe some dollar store reading glasses. When people ask what you are, you can tell them you are a one night stand! A lampshade on your head will complete the look.

Don’t want to make your own? HalloweenExpress.com has one night stand costumes for a pretty reasonable price.

Have you ever dressed up as a one night stand?

An Egg

Once again,HalloweenExpress.com has fried egg costumes (at a really good price) if you don’t want to make your own. However, it’s a fairly simple craft – it likely just won’t come out looking as professional as this one.

This is the easiest one possible, other than maybe a ghost. Wear all white. If you can make yourself look rounder, that is ideal; try stuffing cloth in your clothing. Use an old shirt and paint a yellow yolk across your midsection. If you don’t have an old white shirt, you can use fabric tape and cut a yellow circle out of felt.

Use a helmet and cover it in either felt or paper. Make a jagged edge to look like a cracked egg.  You can also go without the helmet.

Jazz it up with some homemade bacon (make it out of felt) and carry a flipper!

You can also buy an egg costume (one of the less expensive halloween costumes I’ve come across) or be a deviled egg!

Classics

Sometimes, you just want to go as something classic for Halloween. These will save you money and will likely be quick, easy fixes if you don’t have a costume yet.

Ghost

Cutting eye holes in an old, white sheet is a classic Halloween costume and while it seems obvious, it’s an easy way to dress up while saving time and money.

Animal

You or your child may want to go as an animal for Halloween, in which case there is no point in spending a ton of money on a costume when you could make it at home. Try wearing black, getting some ears and a tail from the dollar store and painting a nose and whiskers on your face with eyeliner or face paint.

You can also make the tail and ears with a simple headband, and some black and pink felt.

The same goes for bunny rabbit (try wearing grey, making the ears longer) or a dog (brown, make the ears longer and more floppy).

Are you going the homemade route this year for Halloween? Have you saved money this way in the past?

Ways to Save on Car Rentals

Believe it or not, negotiating the rate of your rental car is something that can be done with relatively little effort and can end up saving you a lot of money. There are multiple car-rental agencies out there and knowing that is what is going to get you one step ahead when it comes to negotiating and getting the best car rental deal. Here are a few tips to keep in mind next time you are in the market for a rental car.

Avoid the big name car rental companies

Believe it or not the big name car companies do not offer the lowest prices or best deals. Their strategy in the market is to create a monopoly over car rentals. A lot of the big names have been acquiring smaller car rentals companies left and right but the fact of the matter is that there are still many small companies out there that are most willing to fight for your business in order to keep their doors open. Try these places first and you’d be surprised what they can offer you.

Leave the airport before finding your rental car rental

The price that you are paying for a rental car for the airport is at a much heftier price tag because of the mere convenience you are receiving by not having to leave the airport to find a rental car. The fact of the matter is that by leaving the airport and going to a car rental company somewhere else, you can often save up to fifty percent.

Package car rental deals are the real money savers

Often times if you are traveling, a car is not the only thing that you will be renting. If you are staying in a hotel or flying somewhere, you can often times look for package deals that include rental cars. These offer a huge savings, but may require a little more work and planning than just booking everything separately.

Early bird gets the worm

Let’s face it, it is human nature to put things off or procrastinate. Travel agencies and other industries related to travel, know this and take advantage of it. It is for this reason that you can often time save a lot of money by booking your rental car early. However, this is not a foolproof rule. It is wise to check back a few times leading up to your booking date and make sure that rates have not dropped. If they have there is no penalty for cancelling your reservation and taking advantage of the lower rate.

Be a coupon cutter and keep your eyes open for discounts

If you are a part of a large organization, whether it be your employer or your insurance provider, chances are you will be able to cash in on a discount offered by this organization for your rental car. Aside from that, the internet provides as a great resource for searching for coupons or other discounts. There are actually whole websites devoted to finding you coupon codes and discounts or specials.

How have you had success in getting the best car rental deals?

Decorating Our First Home: DIY Style

One of the biggest challenges we encountered when moving from our small one bedroom apartment to our detached family home was decorating and furnishing this new home. We now had three bedrooms and a lot more living space to decorate and tend to. Purchasing our home was the priority; we weren’t going to worry about the decorating aspect until later.

Later came, and went, and we still didn’t have an answer to how we were going to balance our financial priorities as well as making room in our budget to spruce up our new house. Basics were taken care of, couch, bed, table to eat at but our house was lacking some serious love. Like any new homeowner, I wanted to make my house feel more like a home.

Shopping Time

Once hubby and I were settled in our new home we were excited about being able to decorate. We set off to the stores with our tight, but optimistic, budget in hopes of returning home with a car full of pretty goodies to fashion up our home. Boy did we ever underestimate the cost of, everything…

I walked into our first store and headed right to the discount/clearance section looking for curtains. With my window measurements in hand, I was sure we’d strike gold given our open minds; after all we were trying to be realistic. Needless to say I was shocked when they wanted $50.00 per window panel and this was clearance! I needed at least eight. Not happening. This same story replayed with everything we wanted to buy, mirrors, frames, art. I suffered serious sticker shock.

Time To Get Creative and DIY

The suffrage we endured from the sticker shock initially irritated me. I wanted to have a pretty, comfortable, home but was totally unwilling to drop thousands of dollars to do it. Heck, I was too cheap to drop the few hundred to dress my windows properly. It was time to get creative.

I’m a big believer that if someone else can do it, so can you. If someone else can make curtains, why couldn’t I? I needed to get curtains up in our basement windows ASAP since there was no covering at all and it was a security and privacy concern. I found fabric at a local close-out sale in the form of a flat bed sheet, bought thicker curtain backing material at the local fabric shop and whipped out the ‘ol sewing machine. After countless YouTube videos and a few practice stitches I felt confident enough to attempt the curtains. Why they aren’t perfect they look pretty good and for a total cost of $25 I’m more than happy with them.

The curtains were just the beginning of many DIY projects that my husband and I worked on together to decorate our home. We’ve done everything from curtains to framing out and building a fully functional wet-bar in our basement. While we have great resources around us, in the form of my husband’s dad and grandfather, anyone can do it.

Whether decorating your first home, or just trying to spruce your current living space, don’t immediately rule out your own talents. With internet and library resources, it is very easy to find online videos and tutorials about how to do just about anything. Ask your family and friends too, you may be surprised at their hidden talents.
